We have long held that South Africa is the most exciting New World wine nation, with a fantastic terroir, a wide range of old vines and a plethora of innovative, sometimes maverick winemakers. But beyond the big names and top cuvees lie hidden vinous treasures: small parcels of wonderful experimental wines too small to be commercial, off-cuts from the top cuvees, and so on. It is the mission of Richard Kelley, Master of Wine, to seek out these gems and Liberate them from obscurity under his own Liberator label.


Each wine is a one-off, and when it's gone it's gone. For the first time ever, we have enough 'releases' for a mixed case to let you sample the quality and diversity of the label.


The wines are generally fruit-driven, but also scream of terroir; all are different, innovative, hugely enjoyable and above all they puch way above their price points.

Episode 8 “An Arrogance of Sommeliers”, Semillon Sauvignon

The source is Vergelegan, a spare tank of Semillon from the renowned ‘Reserve’ and ‘GVB’ wines, with a splash of the tip-top Schaarpenberg Sauvignon Blanc 2016 to help it along. Dry, mineral and complex, this will age for many years to come

Episode 15 “Meet the Ecologist”, Organic Pinot Grigio

Meet the Ecologist acknowledges the role played by all those vine-hugging, dungaree-wearing, sandal-shod, stereotypes making biological wines. This is almost certainly the only organic Pinot Grigio from the Cape and a long-way removed from those cheap, industrial wine found in north-east Italy!

Episode 11 “Homage to Catalonia”, Barrel-fermented Macabeo

Believed to be the first ever single varietal release of Macabeo from South Africa. First crop fruit from Solms Delta in Franschhoek, the vines yielded just one barrel of wine. It was considered more of a hindrance by the cellar and was on the verge of being blended into obscurity. Rich, serious and complex

Episode 7 “Swartland Evolution”, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon

Cinsault fell out of favour in South Africa in the 1960s but has been re-discovered by New-Wave winemakers. Much was replaced, so most Cinsault in the Cape is invariably an old vine. While Cabernet is globally popular it is eschewed by members of the Swartland Independent movement. The result here is fruit driven, but serious and complex.

Episode 10 “Midnight at the Lost & Found”, Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir from Tulbagh. This light, fragrant and slightly savoury Pinot would fool many an expert that it originated in the northern hemisphere. Classic and very food-friendly wine.

Episode 13 “Terroir by Truck”, Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah

Terroir by Truck takes on the elephant in the room to expose all those life-style cellars in Franschhoek which elect to import their grapes from other region to compensate for the lack of viable or interesting viticultural sites within the confines of this narrow valley. A lovely juicy, fruit-driven Rhone blend

The Cape Crusader believes that Chenin Blanc is the world`s best grape variety and he is determined to preach this message with evangelical zeal to all the budding winemakers in South Africa! Akin to a ripe Vouvray from a good vintage

Episode 6 “Dr Melck & the Spiders froms SARS”, Chenin, Sauvignon, Verdelho, Viognier

Remarkable punchy, multi blend South African with creamy, peachy notes and balanced tropical fruit notes. Rounded, rich but balanced with good acidity making it really savoury overall.”

The Francophile Syrah (2 bottles)

This Syrah is from the De Morgenzon vineyards in Stellenbosch and closely resembles the wines of Crozes-Hermitage & Saint-Joseph. The wine shows red-black fruit & a slight floral note on the palate. Very drinkable now but capable of ageing for a further 3-5 years easily.

Episode 9 “the Bishop of Norwich”, Fortified, a blend of Port-grapes

Liberators seasonal offering, a  single barrel of Cape ‘Port’, aged in cask for two years, Produced from a vineyard planted back in 1965, this field blend includes a selection of classic Portuguese grape varieties. Rich and powerful Vintage style, will benefit from some time in bottle.
