Un Voyage Francais

Finding quality & value from France is increasingly difficult, particularly post-Brexit, but we think our little jaunt around France offers some sublime, classic flavours from producers that represent the best of their regions.

WHITE WINES

LOIRE                         Muscadet de Sevre et Maine, Sur Lie, Domaine du Pallet

So long neglected, Muscadet is once again becoming popular for its dry refreshing minerality. This subtley floral and fruity example has a medium body, crisp white fruit and a long and lingering finish of citrus and pear. Pop it with a plate full of prawns.

LANGUEDOC          Picpoul de Pinet, Domaines Felines Jourdan

Picpoul de Pinet is one of the best whites from the south of France and the Jourdan estate is probably the best property in the appellation. Full-flavoured, dry yet with crisp freshness and a beguiling citrus and herb flavour, it can be enjoyed on its own but is incredibly food-friendly.

LOIRE                        Sauvignon de Touraine, Domaine Echardieres

Lovely dry wine with citrus and black current buds notes - very fruity with a nice refreshing finish. Always impresses and tasted blind out-scores many a Sancerre or Pouilly. Brilliant with goat cheese, fish, seafood or asparagus.

AUVERGNE              Pinot Gris, Les Coutayres, Caves Saint-Verny

A stonking wine from France’s ‘lost region’, the Auvergne: quite full-bodied, textured, powerful with aromas and flavours of apricot and peach with spice notes and a mineral backbone, balanced by crisp acidity.

BURGUNDY              Rully, Les Chaumes, Jacques Dury

Bargain Burgundy – a lively wine that’s developed rich aromas of brioche, apple and citrus. The palate is wonderfully creamy and fresh with a beautiful lush, rich mouthfeel perfectly balanced by crisp acidity

LOIRE                         Touraine Chenonceaux, Le Long Bec,  Domaine Echardieres

Flasgship wine from the Echardieres estate, a leader in the new Chenonceaux appellation. Vibrant tropical fruit and a clean, lean grassy note are given extra heft by some time spent on lees which has developed a savoury, rich character. Punchy and pure.

RED WINES

RHONE                      Cotes du Rhones, Les Terres du Roy

A delightful Rhone with an enticing nose that is ripe and concentrated, full of black and red berried fruit. It is supple, rich yet balanced with crisp acidity. Its delightful to drink now, on its own or paired with charcuterie, lamb or beef dishes.

VARS                          Pinot Noir, Les Valmoissines, Louis Latour

Burgundian-style Pinot, the grapes sourced from the Vars region grown at similar altitudes to Latour’s vineyards in the Côte de Beaune. Candied cherry fruits with a spicy perfume on the nose, velvety textured, brimming with ripe cherry and strawberry fruit, laced with vanilla, leading to a rounded finish.

RHONE                      Ventoux, Famille Perrin

From the slopes of Mount Ventoux, the nose shows ripe cherry, blackberry jam, spicy and leather notes. A round, fruity and ample palate of red fruit liquorice and grilled aromas together with a slight minerality. A perfect match to good cheeses but great with a wide variety of dishes.

BORDEAUX               Chateau Brande Bergere, Bordeaux Superieure

if you're looking for a good smooth "Claret" this is it. Deep red in color, well structured, round, and very elegant, with aromas of blackberry and raspberry, and a nice sweetness on the finish. The wine is refined and delicately fruity, with a hint of acidity, and nicely extracted tannins.

BEAUJOLAIS             Brouilly, Chateau Pierreux

One of Beaujolais’ best Estates, using organic and biodynamic principles with a Burgundian approach to ensure a distinctive and serious style. Elegant nose with notes of iris, violet and peony. Soft and round on the palate with length revealing floral and dark berry flavours of blueberry and blackcurrant.

AUVERGNE              Syrah, Les Volcanes, Puy de Dome

Produced from young vine Syrah, the wine is raised in used oak and has all the smoky, savoury garrique-like qualities one expects from Côte-Rôtie which lies two sets of hills away to the east on exactly the same latitude.
